Stephen Sizer on “Zionists” and the EDL

In June 2011, Stephen Sizer gave an interview on Malaysian TV.  You can watch an extract from it below:

This is what Sizer said:

‘…the Far Right in Britain is forming an alliance with Zionists because their common enemy are the Muslims, and it’s ironic that the very people who favoured the work of Hitler,  are now working with the Zionists, the English Defence League for example, against the Muslims because they view them as a threat.’

The far-right English Defence League should need no introduction.

“Zionism” is simply the belief that Israel has a right to exist as a Jewish state. It is an ideology with which the vast majority of British Jews identify, in one way or another. Most British Jews are Zionist, in one way or another. The Jewish community has a number of Zionist organisations such as the Zionist Federation and We Believe in Israel. Needless to say, there are wide differences in opinion among British Jews on specific actions of the Israeli government.

When Sizer claims that “Zionists” are forming an alliance with the Far Right, he is therefore insinuating that the vast majority of British Jews are sympathetic to far-right politics (and not just any far-right politics – Sizer specifically mentions Adolf Hitler, thereby suggesting that the vast majority of British Jews are in league with the successors of history’s greatest antisemite).

He provides no evidence for the claim and, needless to say, no such evidence exists.

Isn’t this legitimate criticism of the Israeli government?

No. Sizer doesn’t even mention the Israeli government.

It’s not even a legitimate criticism of Zionist organisations in the UK: it’s false.

Implications

When Stephen Sizer claimed that British “Zionists” were forming an alliance with the far-right, he wasn’t making legitimate criticism of the Israeli government.

The claim was antisemitic.
